🇸🇮🇵🇸 Thousands rally in Ljubljana against Slovenia’s pro-Israel turn

Large crowds gathered outside the Slovenian parliament in Ljubljana, waving Palestinian flags and carrying signs targeting Prime Minister Janez Janša and Benjamin Netanyahu.

The protest comes amid a major shift in Slovenian foreign policy following Janša’s return to power. His government has moved to reverse measures imposed against Israel by the previous government, while Israel has announced plans to open its first embassy in Slovenia.

Slovenia recognized Palestine in 2024 and under the previous government imposed an arms embargo on Israel and a travel ban on Netanyahu. Janša has long advocated reversing that course.

Novica o preklicu nominacije Tanje Fajon za posebno predstavnico EU za Sahel me glede na razvoj dogodkov ni presenetila, sem pa nad ravnanjem vlade razočarana. Odrekanje tovrstne podpore namreč pomeni, da pri podpori slovenskim kandidatkam in kandidatom za funkcije v mednarodnih institucijah bolj kot izkušnje in znanje šteje politična pripadnost.

Rezultat takega ravnanja je manjša prisotnost oz. kar odsotnost Slovenk ali Slovencev na pomembnih položajih v evropskih in mednarodnih institucijah. Država, iz katere bo prišel novi predstavnik in ki razume pomen delovanja v mednarodnem okolju, bo zagotovo zelo vesela te pridobitve. Prav države, ki svojih interesov ne morejo uveljavljati zgolj zaradi svoje geografske velikosti, bi morale posebej skrbeti za to, da se mednarodno profilira čimveč njihovih kadrov, saj ugledne pozicije zanje niso ravno samoumevne.

Neimenovanje Tanje Fajon za posebno predstavnico EU za Sahel je tako morda mala zmaga za neko politično opcijo, je pa hkrati velik poraz za državo.
