Abuja-based lawyer and Borno indigene, Hamza Nuhu Dantani, has condemned the Borno State High Court’s sentencing of members of the ‘Zanga Zanga’ protest group in Maiduguri, calling it “oppression and lack of justice.” Reacting to court documents showing five-year jail terms handed to several defendants, Dantani said the judgment exposed “cruelty” against young protesters, some aged just 14 and 15.
“If a person looks carefully at these court documents, they will understand the kind of oppression and injustice done to those sentenced to five years each for protesting in Maiduguri,” Dantani said in Hausa, in a statement translated for this report. “They didn’t steal, they didn’t kill anyone, they didn’t hold a gun. They didn’t even destroy anyone’s property. In fact, look at the ages of some of them — one is 14, another 15.”
Dantani faulted the prosecution’s evidence, arguing that claims the defendants were caught with weapons were false. “Everything they said they were caught with — all lies. Because government couldn’t present it in court: no machete, no sword, no gun. It was only written down as slander,” he said. “By law, if you accuse someone of carrying a weapon, you must bring the weapon to court to prove it. But they brought nothing. They didn’t even bring a rope before the court.”
The lawyer highlighted one case he called most disturbing: “One of them, his offense was allegedly telling Governor Zulum ‘2 billion’ — that was why he was jailed for five years.” He contrasted the arrests, made a week after the protest ended, with what he described as state leniency toward armed groups. “Sadly, they were only arrested one week after the protest ended. Meanwhile, we see armed bandits being forgiven and even given places to stay,” Dantani said.
Dantani warned the rulings would discourage civic action in the North. “How will a northerner come out to protest in this kind of situation, when a governor will have his people framed and then jailed? And if you’re jailed, anyone who speaks up about it is also arrested and jailed,” he stated.
The Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, on June 30, 2025, convicted seven members of the ‘Zanga Zanga’ WhatsApp group for inciting public disturbance and conspiracy to take up arms. The charge sheet said the group used social media to call for protests with “guns, knives, cutlasses, bow and arrows” and accused Governor Babagana Zulum of misappropriating N2 billion. Mohammed Ali, 20, Mohammed Bukar, 28, and Ibrahim Mohammed, 30, were each sentenced to 5 years’ imprisonment. Three defendants — including the 14 and 15-year-olds — received 6 months’ imprisonment plus community service and 20 strokes of the cane each. See the court ruling document in the comment section.
