EPISODE 2 as an Intern Quantity Surveying

Alas, I didn't realize the importance of being an on-site Quantity Surveyor. When my boss told me, "Your job is to record and document the daily work done by the labourers on site," I smiled to myself and thought, "That's an easy task."

Then came one blessed morning.

The cool whisper of the trees mixed with the constant clanging of steel and the sounds of construction echoed across the site. Little did I know that this ordinary morning would become a turning point in my career.

At that stage, I believed I was gaining all the experience I needed as an on-site QS simply by taking measurements and recording work done.

As the days turned into weeks, I became familiar with many of the labourers on site and built meaningful connections with them.

I was the only on-site QS on the construction project for the Ministry of Education (M.O.E.).

Every day, I resumed on site, recorded and measured the work completed, took the square metres of daily work done, counted the blockwork set out, and measured the carpenter's work.

I didn't really know the purpose of Qs onsite until I was assigned a simple task for a new construction project,book the total number of daily workers onsite and their daily work.
