More than 6,300 children under 18 – some as young as two months old, and almost all with no criminal record – have been arrested by federal immigration authorities during President Trump's second term. Nearly half have been detained by ICE at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center outside San Antonio.
@JimAxelrod talks with a family that was held at Dilley for almost four months; and with Rep. Joaquin Castro, who is calling for Dilley to be shut down due to inhumane conditions, allegations the Trump administration denies. https://t.co/rTXOL4c08Z
Accounts from detained families, their lawyers and court filings describe one federal detention center in Texas as a place where hundreds of children languish as they’re served contaminated food, receive little education and struggle to obtain basic medical care. https://t.co/EJ3XLO9Yhi
My mom was stopped and harassed by masked ICE agents while shopping at an outlet mall in Texas. Because she has an accent, they assumed she spoke Spanish and started talking to her in Spanish. When she said she doesn’t speak Spanish, they began demanding where she was “from,” rapidly listing countries without even giving her a chance to respond.
My mom told them she’s been in this country longer than some of them have been alive. She was only allowed to leave after showing a photo of her U.S. passport on her phone.
She is a U.S. citizen. She has lived in this country for 47 years. If you think this is just about “sending criminals back,” you are dead wrong.
Once again, I will remind everyone that our leaders are failing us.
True leadership would be to calm this situation down by telling these non-peaceful protestors to stay home while recalling these inadequately-trained agents.
[ and on a practical basis, for those of you on the right, chaos is sinking President Trump’s popularity. If you lose the midterms, @StephenM will be responsible ]

“There is so much to say about the last 24 hours, but sometimes what matters most is what is yet to be said at all, and what we all still need to hear. By now, we’ve all seen the videos. Renee Good is alive and those videos, behind the wheel of her SUV, her three children expecting mom home again soon come. And we’ve seen the freeze frames, too. We’ve heard the political warfare, the clashing declarations about what happened, and unfortunately, we know the ending for Renee Good. Nothing is going to change that. Yet what we have not yet heard his one another. I spoke to people today who haven’t slept since it happened, who want ICE out now, who don’t like masked men on their street, don’t want their neighbors arrested, don’t want families ripped apart.”
“I’ve heard, too, not on the streets protesting but in passionate notes in my inbox from people who want to see our immigration laws enforced, legally and peacefully and with safety for all, including the officers who, in many cases, are also parents themselves. These are both deeply American sentiments.”
“But our job now is may be the most American thing of all. It’s to find a way to live with people who are genuinely different from us. To try to be fair to them, and in doing so, to make things better, and keep things decent. Because in America, no one else is going to do it for us. It’s not my job to tell you what to think about what happened here yesterday, but I can tell you we owe our children a nation that is better than the one we live in today. And I can say that because we all know it’s true.”

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) describes meeting with two mothers detained by ICE at a detention center in Arizona, telling @margbrennan “they are not a threat to society,” and decrying the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.
“This is not where we should be, and I don’t think this is what the American people wanted,” Kelly says. “The border security issue under President Biden was not working, and I pushed the administration on that. But we have now swung drastically in another direction.”
the kid who shot charlie was only 22. this is insane because 22 means he basically grew up marinating in the broadband soup.
he had no buffer period of pre internet adulthood, no separation between formative years & the always on firehose. his psyche was forged entirely in the age of memes, polarization, constant feeds, & parasocial rage cycles.
we are now seeing individuals in society like this reaching adulthood & have access to very sophisticated weapons. this will be a serious challenge for security in america going forward.
The Trump administration ordered the destruction of $9.7M worth of USAID-purchased contraceptives (pills, IUDs, implants) intended for low-income countries. Despite offers from groups like the Gates Foundation to buy them, they were incinerated, citing they are not "lifesaving" and falsely claiming they induce abortions. This follows broader foreign aid cuts and USAID dismantling. Sources: NYT, Reuters, Guardian.
