The continued detention and reported torture of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, is horrifying and indefensible.

Dr. Abu Safiya has reportedly been held by Israel for more than 18 months without charge or trial. His lawyers and human-rights organizations have raised grave concerns about beatings, torture, severe medical neglect, prolonged isolation, and an imminent threat to his life.

Several U.S. lawmakers, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Rep. Yassamin Ansari, Rep. Jim McGovern, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Darializa and Sen. Chris Van Hollen, have publicly condemned his treatment and demanded his immediate release. United Nations human-rights bodies and Amnesty International have also called for his release, access to medical care, and an end to the reported abuse of Palestinian healthcare workers.

As a physician, it deeply pains me to see a doctor punished for remaining with his patients and keeping a hospital functioning under unimaginable conditions. Healthcare workers must never be targeted, tortured, or imprisoned for doing their duty.

I am also shocked by the silence of many major medical organizations in the United States and around the world. Organizations that rightly speak out when physicians are threatened elsewhere must show the same moral courage here. Medical ethics and human rights cannot be selective.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya must be released immediately, or, at the very least, granted a fair and transparent legal process, independent medical care, and protection from torture and abuse.

Silence in the face of such injustice is not neutrality. It is abandonment.
