So long, I’ll see you down that long dark river
Or floating on that lining in the sky
I'm lucky, lucky enough to have heard you play your song
So long, Jerry. So long...

“Weir carved out his own unique harmonic voice, more like the chordal complexity of McCoy Tyner than any rock ‘n’ roll rhythm guitar we had heard before. He was as essential to the Dead’s sound as anyone on that stage. Bob provided the launchpad for Jerry to lift off and carry us all into another realm. He spun the webs out of six strings that Jerry and Phil’s melodic spiders skittered across and carved psychedelic valleys into the minds of generations who flocked to dance and dream.
Bob Weir did so while looking like he led rafting excursions on the weekends or was an early investor in Apple. He always had a healthy glow, looking like he just rode his bike to the gig. I ran into him once in Ted Kennedy’s office in the early ‘90s - and while I was too shocked to speak, I was thrilled to be in his aura and to see just how sincere and present he was a person.
He placed the music and the muse at the top of his priorities and probably had more fun doing it than most. Bob Weir was the guy who would tell the crowd to take a few steps back in the era of overexuberant fans.
The Grateful Dead’s music was about space as much as anything else, literally and figuratively.
The silence between the notes matters as much as the sounds coming from an instrument. The note you DON’T hear coming out of Alligator or Wolf matters as much much as the note you DO hear.
Weir understood this and created a space for magic to happen - organically, through sympathetic harmony. You can’t fake or phone that in; it takes a hell of a lot of work to surrender to the music.
Bob had already put in his 10,000 hours several times over before the band achieved the sort of success that many would find overwhelming.
He knew exactly what to do with it, and kept the magic alive for another thirty years after Jerry’s passing. Sure, it wasn’t the same but so what? It was ours - and Bobby knew instinctually that if you want to keep something special you have to give it away.
Bob Weir never stopped giving and for that I am grateful.” https://t.co/DQIVwkxhvo
“He was a star wrangler .. a celestial skysage who traded fear for wonder. Now he is riding the northern lights and skipping barefoot between the constellations.” — @BillyStrings
