People misunderstood my tweet. It wasn't directed at Argentina as a nation or their players. It was about the tournament as a whole. There had been so much controversy, so many debates about officiating and decisions throughout the World Cup, especially in matches involving Argentina.

When Spain won, I felt football had finally become the main story again. Instead of talking about referees, VAR or controversy, people were talking about tactics, teamwork and quality on the pitch. That's why I wrote 'Football won.'

I have nothing but respect for Argentina and for Messi. They're one of the greatest teams of this generation. But football should always be decided by what happens on the pitch. Seeing the tournament end with the focus on football instead of controversy was something I was genuinely happy about.
