According to NBC News, since 2019, more than 2,300 unclaimed bodies have been given to the University of North Texas Health Science Center. They were cut up and leased for profit, exploiting the poor and a disproportionate number of Black men, even in death. NBC’s exposé forced the program to suspend operations.
