What Sheikh Yahaya Jingir said in Kano should not be interpreted as the position of all Muslims. As someone from Kano, I know very well that this is not our universal approach. Nigeria is a diverse and deeply mixed country and we understand that governing it requires the acceptance and support of both Muslims and Christians, not only during elections, but even more importantly after the elections.

President Bola Tinubu is President today because both Muslims and Christians voted for him and I believe he will win the 2027 election because Nigerians from both faiths are willing to make that choice again.

I am particularly encouraged that many people have not accepted this position of Sheikh Jingir as representative of Islam or Muslims. I have seen that several respected Islamic clerics and political leaders have spoken out against such an approach. Their interventions are important because they demonstrate that Muslims can disagree with the idea of turning religious identity into an absolute political test without compromising our faith.

Nigeria belongs to all of us, and our politics must reflect that reality.
