On July 22, 2016, history was made at UNC Health when Roy Dreyfuss became the first patient @UNC_Lineberger to receive CAR T-cell therapy in a clinical trial.

🙏It was my pleasure to attend the portrait unveiling ceremony that the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) hosted for Norman "Ned" Sharpless, M.D., on the main NIH campus in Bethesda.
Dr. Sharpless served with distinction in a variety of federal science roles, most notably as director of NIH's National Cancer Institute (NCI) from 2017-2022. During his tenure, he championed investigator-initiated science, advanced childhood cancer research, and promoted big data approaches to oncology, including the Childhood Cancer Data Initiative.
Beyond that, Dr. Sharpless led top research on tumor suppressor genes, cellular senescence, aging, and cancer biology.
America's understanding of cancer research is far better for Dr. Sharpless's service. 🔬

The cover illustration not only captures the “all hands on deck” multidisciplinary approach to performing an en bloc sacrectomy, but also highlights the important role that navigation plays in creating precise osteotomy cuts prior to tumor delivery.
Within our video contribution to the journal, we describe several additional expanded indications of spinal navigation beyond pedicle screw placement:
1) Fully-navigated corpectomy
2) Spatial awareness during VCR to better understand the rostral / caudal / ventral limits of bony resection
3) Utilization of intra-op ultrasound in real-time to perform ventral impaction of retropulsed fragments after traumatic burst fractures
