Coverage policies should keep pace with the science. In a new article published in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, the authors Luis M. Tumialán, MD, Joseph S. Cheng, MD, and John K. Ratliff, MD examine contemporary evidence supporting the use of PEEK and porous titanium interbody cages in ACDF and argue that coverage determinations should reflect current clinical practice and available data. This topic will come to center stage at #SpineSummit in February 2027. https://t.co/ettXYr7Y08

In Special Course 2: Revision in Cervical Spine Surgery Drs. Michael Steinmetz, @ZackRayLab and @ThomasMrozMD1 will walk attendees through challenging cervical revision cases and the lessons learned along the way with @CSRS_org Through case examples, video techniques and interactive discussions, you'll gain practical strategies you can apply in your own practice: https://t.co/QSceFsO1Xz. @WashUNeurosurg @CleClinicNS #SpineSummit

The AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves has reaffirmed its position that arthrodesis, and any intervention that alters spinal biomechanics, should be performed only by specialty-trained neurosurgical or orthopaedic spine surgeons. The statement emphasizes the importance of specialized training, patient safety and optimal outcomes in spine care.

This week, Daniel Sciubba, MD, MBA represented the Spine Section at the Congressional Spine Health Fair on Capitol Hill, sharing the impact of spine care and the importance of ensuring patients have timely access to high-quality treatment.

From improving outcomes through the American Spine Registry to advancing policies that reduce unnecessary barriers to care, spine surgeons continue to be strong advocates for patients both inside and outside the operating room.

Thank you, Dr. Sciubba for your leadership and representation of our specialty! #SpineHealth #SpineSurgery @AANSNeuro @CNS_Update @SpineHealthFdn @AAOS1 @NorthwellHealth

The Spine Section proudly stands with our colleagues at @PhysicianHosp in supporting physician-led healthcare and strengthening the patient–physician relationship.

Section 6001 restricts physician-owned hospitals from competing on the same terms as other hospitals. We support its repeal and a more level playing field—one where innovation, quality, and patient choice can drive care.

Thank you to the physicians and advocates working across specialties to advance these important conversations.

Neurosurgery is well represented in Minneapolis this week at the American Medical Association CPT Editorial Panel meeting.

Drs. Cheerag Upadhyaya (@CheeragU Joshua Rosenow, (@joshuarosenowMD and Henry Woo are participating as CPT Advisors for the @AANSNeuro and @CNS_Update bringing the perspective of neurosurgeons and our patients to the CPT process. They are joined by neurosurgeon Joseph Cheng, who serves independently as a member of the @AmerMedicalAssn CPT Editorial Panel.

We are grateful for the collaboration across specialties and organizations, including our colleagues from @NASSspine @ISASSorg @AAOS1 and @AOA_ortho Working together across the house of medicine is essential to ensuring that CPT keeps pace with innovation, accurately reflects contemporary clinical practice, and supports the care of our patients.

Richard Menger, MD, MPA, is no stranger to making the case for neurosurgery beyond the operating room. A regular contributor to Forbes and other national outlets, he has written extensively about the policies shaping patient care, physician practice, and the future of medicine.

For #NeurosurgeryAwarenessMonth, Dr. Menger, a member of the AANS/CNS Washington Committee, takes us beyond the byline to share why he chose neurosurgery, why advocacy matters, and why protecting the physician-patient relationship remains at the heart of both.

Hear directly from one of neurosurgery's most outspoken physician advocates. 🧠🎥
