Ruto just spent 40 minutes trying to create a false equivalence between our national values set out in the constitution and his so called “development”. Kenyans, please trust me when i tell you there is a reason the Preamble comes before Article 43. It ran a registration drive and called it reform, while ignoring the machinery that makes cover real, which is strategic purchasing, timely provider payment, and supply side readiness. Amartya Sen taught us that health is not a commodity you announce. It is a freedom you enable. A sick citizen who cannot reach care is not free, no matter how many names sit on a database.

There is a psychology to this too. When a people are promised care and handed paperwork again and again, they learn a quiet helplessness. They stop expecting the state to work, and a nation that stops expecting is a nation that stops demanding. I am backing Edwin Sifuna because a government can be rebuilt around effective coverage and paid providers, and I want to help design that machinery. What would you build behind the veil, if you did not know your place?
