Ignoring inflation, it looks like money distributed to states has increased by almost 4x from 2017 to 2025.

But when you adjust for inflation, that story falls apart. The N21.9trn shared in 2025 can’t buy as much as the N5.64trn shared in 2017. That doesn’t look like growth. It’s even worse on a per capita basis, as population has increased.

It’s not all bad news. In real terms, FAAC has grown 2 years running, in 2024 and 2025, on the back subsidy removal. That’s more real money for government to spend to improve the lives of the people they superintend over. Whether they do so is a valid but separate conversation.

P.S: For apples to apples comparison, inflation adjustment does it better than conversion to USD.

In 2017, it was ₦5.64 trillion.

At the state level, the jump was even bigger. States went from ₦4.8 trillion in revenue in 2022 to ₦15.5 trillion in 2025.

So what happened to all that extra money?
