A businessman recently joked that in Rwanda today, it’s easier to borrow a smile than a bank loan because the moment you sign the papers, you start counting losses instead of profits. His story captures a harsh reality. Imagine a trader who borrows Frw 25 million to expand his business. By the time he finishes paying the loan in four years, he ends up returning nearly Frw 49 million almost double what he borrowed. With such heavy interest, it’s no surprise that many entrepreneurs feel like they are working for the banks, not for themselves.

According to the @CentralBankRw , as of June 2025, the country’s 11 major banks held total assets of Frw 9.6 trillion, a 22.5% increase from the previous year. These institutions control roughly two-thirds of Rwanda’s financial system, proving their immense strength and influence. Yet, while banks continue to grow richer, many small and medium enterprises especially in trade, manufacturing, and hospitality are struggling under the weight of expensive loans.

This imbalance poses a real threat to the government’s ambition of creating 250,000 jobs per year for the next four years. Sustainable growth requires more than profitable banks; it demands financial systems that allow businesses to breathe, grow, and employ.
