Regarding my last post asking the Christian Association of Nigeria not to threaten the Muslim Ummah with a lawsuit on the temporal closure of schools during Ramadan, I see some people claiming that the New Year holidays and festivities are general.

For those saying the New Year is for all, I encourage you to learn about other cultures so you can expand your knowledge. The New Year holidays are not for all. They were forced on all Nigerians first by the colonialists and then by the Nigerian state.

The New Year in Nigeria is based on the Gregorian calendar of Christendom. Please fact-check me. Before colonialism, the dominant calendar in the geographical location now known as Nigeria was the Islamic calendar. Please assume I am lying and fact-check me.

The fact that Muslims accepted this for the peace and stability of Nigeria does not mean that it is a secular holiday.

For over 500 years before European colonialists imposed their calendar on us, Arewa celebrated the Hijri New Year. They have given that up for Nigeria.

Ethiopia is the only African country that was never colonised. Because of that, it does not celebrate the Gregorian New Year. Instead, it marks its own cultural New Year according to its Indigenous calendar. Their New Year is called Enkutatash and will be celebrated on Thursday, September 11, 2025, in the Gregorian Calendar.

When you see me in Ethiopia around that time each year, it is because of Enkutatash and Meskel.

Read the Kano Chronicles. They predate Nigeria and mention celebrating the Hijri New Year. Nigeria does not start until Lagos and end in Onitsha.

Try to develop the ability to see things from other people's points of view and not be entirely ruled by your own biases.

Why Waziri Atiku Abubakar Should Cut President Bola Tinubu Some Slack

I supported the candidacy of Waziri Atiku Abubakar. However, the election was not stolen from him or the Nigerian public. 

It would have been hard for us in the Peoples Democratic Party to win the 2023 Presidential election. 

If, as a united political party, the PDP could not defeat the APC in 2019, how could we have vanquished them in 2023 when we were disunited? 

We had 11,262,978 votes in 2019. By 2022, Peter Obi had left us with the 1,693,485 votes we got in the Southeast. Then the G-5 Governors departed and ended whatever hopes we had of getting 25% in their states.

Then we lost Kwankwaso with his two million votes.

If you minus Southeast, Kano, and Oyo, Benue and Rivers votes, you will see that it roughly equals the 6,984,520 votes polled by Waziri Atiku Abubakar in 2023.

We were defeated by the disunity in our party.

Let me now address some alternative policies Waziri Atiku proposed.

Waziri said he would have taken a gradual approach and would not have been as drastic as President Tinubu had been.

Given the reality of what the Tinubu administration inherited, I do not know if that would have been possible.

Have we forgotten that the Buhari administration illegally borrowed ₦50 trillion through ways and means and depleted our foreign reserves, leaving behind more debt than all past governments combined?

The Buhari regime claimed they left a foreign reserve of $37.08 billion, only for JP Morgan, our reserve bankers, to say they lied and our reserves were just $3.7 billion. The fallout of this is that Buhari's CBN Governor panicked and was arrested as he tried to flee Nigeria.

Faced with these realities, how would any responsible government carry on spending $1 billion monthly on fuel subsidy, $1.5 billion monthly defending the Naira and a further $300 million monthly subsidising electricity while servicing a total debt of almost $100 billion with 92% of our revenue as at the end of Buhari's tenure?

On February 26, 2024, Waziri said:

"President Javier Milei of Argentina was sworn into office on 10 December 2023. He inherited a worse condition than Nigeria’s. But what he did to return his country to a place where investors are ‘starting to believe’ should serve as a lesson to Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu.”

Interestingly, on Friday, September 27, 2024, The Financial Times, in a headline 'Argentina’s poverty rate soars above 50% under Javier Milei' revealed that rather than praise, the Argentine leader reforms have failed.

Poverty in Argentina is at its worst rate ever at 57%, and "136,000 jobs have been wiped out since Milei took office."

Additionally, according to the IMF, Argentina is now officially in recession as its economy has contracted by 3.5% in the last quarter and inflation hit a world record of 236.7%.

In contrast, Nigeria under Tinubu experienced two quarters of unprecedented trade surpluses, and at the end of August 2024 had a ₦14.6 trillion trade surplus and a GDP growth of almost 3%. Inflation had been tamed and minimum wage increased.

Next month, for the first time since Aguiyi-Ironsi abrogated true federalism with his Unification of Assets Decree Number 34 on May 24, 1966, Local Governments will receive their funding directly due to the Tinubu administration's judicial victory at the Supreme Court on Thursday, July 11, 2024, granting autonomy to local governments.

Our foreign reserves hit a record of $40.2 billion because we no longer indulge in the politically popular but economically unreasonable act of defending the Naira with $1.5 billion each month. 

Now, imagine if President Tinubu had taken that February 26, 2024 advice from Waziri Atiku Abubakar to copy what Milei did, where would Nigeria be?

That alone shows that President Tinubu's judgment is much better than Waziri Atiku Abubakar is giving him credit for, and it should be Javier Milei who ought to learn from Nigeria's Tinubu, not vice versa!

It betrays a lack of understanding of corporate governance and unawareness of how government operates when politicians and activists attack President Bola Tinubu over statements and actions of the NNPCL.

If the public is not made aware that such criticism knowingly or inadvertently passed on wrong information to them, they will act on this incorrect information as though it were true. 

The NNPCL, though state-owned, is a limited liability company that is not subject to the Appropriation Act or the Fiscal Responsibility Act in the way ministries, departments, and agencies are. 

While MDAs are governmental organisations, the NNPCL is more accurately a quasi-governmental agency but not an actual one.

The NNPCL right now is like the NLNG Limited and, to a limited extent, the CBN. 

Both the NLNG Ltd and the NNPCL are answerable to their board. They can spend money outside the budget because they are not a Ministry, Department or Agency of the government. They are just like any other company, such as MTN, First Bank or Indorama. The only difference between these companies and the NNPCL is their ownership. They are owned by private individuals and are publicly traded. The Nigerian state owns the NNPCL.

The Federal Government has majority shares, which gives the President the power to appoint the GMD. 

To an extent, the NNPCL is like the CBN, which, though the President appoints the Governor, is still independent of the President and the Government. 

Ownership and control of the NNPCL are separate. These changes were not even made by this administration and are settled.

Yes, the President is the Minister of Petroleum Resources. However, critics are mistaken in thinking that that places him in control of the NNPCL.

The Ministry of Petroleum Resources is limited to regulating the industry and ensuring that IOCs and other major stakeholders have an enabling environment to function.

The relationship is very similar to that between the Ministry of Power and the Gencos and Discos.

These generating companies (Gencos) are privately owned and have a minority stake held by the federal government of Nigeria. As such, the Ministry of Power has a regulatory role in the industry. That is the whole essence of deregulation.

And it is not peculiar to Nigeria.

The British equivalent of NNPCL is British Petroleum. It is a wholly privately owned company, similar to British Gas and British Airways.

Only a policy illiterate will hold the British Government responsible for their internal runnings. What you can hold the government or the United Kingdom responsible for is failure to regulate them.

On the issue of a new presidential jet, it should be pointed out that the latest of the current presidential jets were bought during the Obasanjo administration, and collectively, they have a median age above forty years. Thus, the public should bear in mind the following:

The US ordered a new Presidential Jet from Boeing at $3.9 billion, whereas the so-called new jet is actually a fairly used jet costing an estimated $100 million.

The annual cost of maintaining the current U.S. Presidential Jet, Air Force One, is $177,000 an hour. If you take the total yearly maintenance cost, it is more than the purchase price of our new Presidential Jet.

President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran died due to the failure of an old Presidential aircraft. Is that what we want in Nigeria?

Canada was seriously disgraced last year when the Prime Minister's jet, which was newer than our old Presidential jet, refused to start while he visited India. Now, they have ordered multiple new ones.

Commercial planes do not always fly directly between countries on the President's itinerary and Nigeria. And it is even a security risk for our President to fly commercially.

Moreover, if flying private jets is so bad, how come Peter Obi and all major Presidential candidates in the last election rode on one?

On Paul Okoye's Call For President Tinubu To Reduce Fuel Price To ₦450

People like Paul Okoye may mean well, but they are not sufficiently aware of the economics of scale that drive commodity prices. That is why he says the President should reduce petrol price to ₦450 if he truly loves Nigeria.

Paul Okoye sells music. Is he prepared to slash the cost of streaming his music by half? Then why is he asking the President to do what he, as a private citizen, cannot do and has not done? Does he not love his fans?

Some people are even prepared to take their own flesh and blood to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission if they do not see every penny of their music royalties.

Is Mr. Okoye aware that if the government artificially reduces the price of petrol, the government will have to pay refiners and importers the difference between ₦450 and the actual cost of petrol? Where will the money come from?

Nigeria is already the third most indebted country in the world to the World Bank's International Development Association, mostly from General Buhari's borrowings.

As it now stands, a significant portion of our nation's revenue is going towards debt servicing and repayment.

And when you take into effect that less than 10% of Nigerians pay taxes, where will the money come from?

The only way the Federal Government can reduce the cost of petrol below the actual market price is through further borrowing or printing more Naira, which will lead to devaluation. When that happens, people will complain.

Nigeria is not an oil-rich nation. Divided by our population, our total annual income from oil and gas comes to $150 per Nigerian.

From that money, our government is meant to pay civil servants, build infrastructure, provide free education, and maintain our military and law enforcement.

Nigeria is not oil-rich at all. We are oil-poor. On a per capita basis, Ghana is more oil-rich than we are. We produce 1.5 million barrels per day for a population of 220 million people. Ghana produces 200,000 barrels per day for a population of 32 million. 

And it is not that we do not have the capacity to pay our taxes. We do. We just choose not to. Nigerians are more faithful at paying tithes to churches than taxes to the government. Yet, the Nigerian government is more transparent with how they spend your tax Naira than these churches.

The government publishes its revenue, they also have a budget, and there is the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which guides spending. There is also the Freedom of Information Act, which allows citizens to scrutinise government spending. How many churches have such checks and balances? Yet, we see how extravagantly their pastors live.

For Paul Okoye and others like him to understand how difficult it is to bring form petrol price, let them Tahoe the Dangote Refinery for example.

The Dangote Refinery is sold Nigerian crude oil in Naira at a slight discount. Yet, this commercially run refinery is unlikely to sell petrol cheaper than the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation PLC does.

If it were as easy as Paul Okoye demands, would Dangote not do it?

Even in oil-producing countries, like the United States, where 59% of their citizens pay taxes, they have not reduced fuel costs to ₦450. How much less in Nigeria, where less than 10% of us pay taxes?

Nigerians want to live at the expense of the state forgetting that the state has to live at the expense of the people or it will collapse, like the Soviet Union in 1991.

I just saw a laughable demand by one of the organisers of tomorrow's protest demanding that the Lagos State Government provide air-conditioned buses for protesters. Well, I agree with him. As long as the buses are to ferry them to their states of origin. You can't relocate to Lagos from states that owe salaries, like Abia, Nasarawa, and Ansmbra, only to want to protest in a Lagos that pays civil servants above minimum wage at ₦70,000 and does not owe.

You have not protested in Abia, which is not paying even the old minimum wage and owing workers. But it is in Lagos, where public schools are either free or subsidised, and the government built red and blue line railways to get you from A to B inexpensively, pays above minimum wage without using workers, gives you free healthcare, and has built ports, roads and independent power projects that you want to protest against? No!

Go and protest for your state to be as good as Lagos State!

Monday sit at homes have destroyed the economy of the Southeast. Nobody has protested against that till today. Unknown Gunmen are terrorising the Southeast. There has been no organised protest against that. None of the five Southeastern states regularly pays the old minimum wage and all owe salaries in one form or the other. We have not seen protests.

If protests over economic hardships are patriotic and genuine, they ought to begin from the Southeast, not Lagos, where every day, including weekends, is open for business, where there is security of life and property, and where the Lagos State Government has been paying ₦70,000 minimum wage since February of 2024, in addition to providing free healthcare, subsidised education, and a world-class metro rail network, and BRT municipal buses, as well as providing palliatives to all residents regardless of ethnicity.

Am I lying?

If the Gregorian New Year used by Christians is made a public holiday, then why should we not also make Al Hijri, the Islamic New Year, which is the first day of Muharram, a public holiday? There needs to be more equity in Nigeria if we must promote unity and equality, without which we cannot fulfil our potential as a people. In China, they celebrate the Gregorian Calendar New Year, as well as the Chinese New Year.

Our work week of Monday to Friday, is already skewed against Muslims, considering that Friday is their Quran-approved holy day for Jumuah prayers. But Sunday, Christendom's day for congregational worship, is work-free. As Christians and Traditional African religion adherents, let us think about the fact that at least half, and more likely more than half, our population are Muslims. Is our society equitably structured to benefit them? Answer honestly, and not from a sentimental basis. How would you feel if Sunday was a work day, while Friday is work-free? Or if the first of Muharram was a public holiday and January 1st was not?

Things are hard in Nigeria because fuel subsidy has been ended, and the Naira has been floated. And the reason why is that Nigeria is broke. And Nigeria is broke because General Buhari borrowed more than all previous governments combined. We cannot keep borrowing to consume. Please fact-check me. If we keep borrowing, we will only pass the hardship to our children. Let us bear it now and pass prosperity to the next generation.

Many celebrities currently doing videos just want to trend. They neither understand the issues Nigeria is facing nor do they care. Others are unhappy with the result of the last election and are weaponising the current hardship to bring down the current administration. Listen, I, Reno Omokri, urge you to stand with Nigeria. •Watch less Hollywood and Bollywood movies, and go for Nollywood and Kannywood
•Holiday and honeymoon in Obudu Cattle Ranch, Yankari Games Reserve, Ikogosi Warm Springs, and attend Argungu Fishing Festival
•Reject imported frozen fish, meat and dairy products and buy fresh produce from local producers

Nobody is coming to save Nigeria. It is only Nigerians that will save Nigeria. Local brands may or may not be as good as foreign ones, but with continued patronage, they will improve in quality. Buy them, and your Naira will rise along with your personal happiness and the international rating of the green Nigerian passport. Your value is tied to Nigeria's value. Buy Nigerian and Nigeria's foreign reserves, trade balances, and debt to GDP ratio will automatically improve.

This is the type of nation I have always been preaching and teaching about. Look at Jide Sanwoolu, a Christian, sitting and listening as President Tinubu and other Muslims pray at the Ansar-Ud-Deen Central Mosque. Surulere.

He did not die. God will not reject him for this. He is living by the Golden Law Yeshua taught us-Love your neighbour as yourself.

It does not mean he agrees or accepts Islam. But it indicates empathy for Islam. And when there is consciousness of other religions, peaceful religious coexistence is more likely.

President Tinubu himself has attended several church services, including the Holy Ghost Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

That is why I have consistently advocated that Christian students should COMPULSORILY take Islamic Religious Knowledge, while Muslim pupils should MANDATORILY study Christian Religious Knowledge. While atheists and adherents of African traditional religions are given an option to study at least one of the Abrahamic religions.

That way, we will build a new nation where we understand ourselves. Because it is a fallacy to think we can forget our differences. Never. We can only understand them.

Tinubu has his challenges. He could have gone to #COP28 with a much smaller delegation than 422. But at least the economy is responding to his policies. The Nigerian Stock Market is up 34.11%. Our GDP is up 2.54%. Oil production is up 13.40%. Balance of trade is now in surplus to the time of over 52%, which is the highest in five years. And most importantly, Peter Obi and Arise Peoples Party's lies are also up 100%!

If you actually believe that President Tinubu used public funds to pay for 1400 Nigerians to be on his entourage to #COP28, then you have below-average intelligence. Are these not the same lies that @SaharaReporters told you and made you vote out President Jonathan, only to start suffering under Buhari, and only for Buhari to arrest and detain the same Sowore, whose lies enabled him to become President? Now, Sowore is trending #FreeSowore. It is alright to hate President Tinubu. But at least engage your brain before believing every propaganda you see from notoriously dishonest media like @AriseTV and Sahara Reporters.
