We know that one day we will die, but do we know our own death? This is the question that Bataille takes up in this piece. He goes about it through Hegel, or at least through Kojève’s interpretation of Hegel. In this reading, the awareness of death is part of what makes us human.
An unlikely point of convergence: Hans-Hermann Hoppe's critique of democracy and its implications for guild socialism and revolutionary syndicalism, a thread. 🧵
V. The syndicalist argument that democratic centralism is the fundamental means by which the working class is severed from the rest of society is a direct application of Hoppe's criticism of the welfare-warfare state and provides a strong basis for the syndicalist ideal of-
political units are more accountable and more economically efficient is precisely the kind of thing that syndicalists would want to latch onto in order to argue for the existence of independent worker federations and local guilds.
IV. Given that, left wing decentralists can take Hoppe’s emphasis on secession, hyper-decentralization and local government as a springboard for their own institutional arrangements.
Of course Hoppe is a proponent of private property anarchism, but his argument that smaller-
III. Omitting the progressive gloss on electoral democracy, Hoppe's view is of considerable use to anti-statist socialists in explaining how centralized political democracy will inevitably become oligarchic state capitalism rather than genuine worker emancipation.
I. Hoppe's libertarian take on democracy in his work, Democracy: The God That Failed is in fact a very potent argument in favor of guild socialists and syndicalists.
It identifies the fatal flaws of the modern democratic state and the "tragedy of the commons" which afflicts all-
For the syndicalists and guild socialists who have always been in opposition to state bureaucracy and in favor of a system of decentralized, worker-run economic organizations, this is a powerful argument for their deep-seated antipathy to the capitalist nation-state.
II. The transient nature of politicians leads them to be in favor of extracting as much as possible from the commons before their time is up. The result is an ever escalating level of debt, inflation and general decay. -
Appalling. Repeatedly, on abortion, war, spending, corruption etc the argument “We have to support the GOP in order to advance our principles” has morphed into “We have to abandon our principles in order to support the GOP.” This bait-and-switch will continue until it is punished
One thing I've noticed is the decline in the use of "prejudice" as a buzzword to shut down all discussion of the topic of mass-migration and race. This is due to the nature of the demographic change already being present and a part of every day life. From the naive hippie fantasies of the 20th century to a visceral anti-European hatred. They don't even deny the negative effects of mass-migration anymore but blame it on socio-economic factors whilst simultaneously praising how scab slave labour benefits the "economy" and makes those very "bourgeois oppressors" rich.
"He who would live must fight. And he who doesn’t wish to fight in this world of permanent struggle has no right to live. Such a saying may sound harsh–and so it is! Yet far harsher is the fate of he who believes that he can overcome Nature, and thus in reality insults her. Distress, misery, and disease are her replies! Whoever ignores or misjudges the laws of race deprives himself of the happiness that belongs to him. He places an obstacle in the victorious path of the superior race and, by doing so, interferes with a precondition of all human progress. Burdened with humanitarian sentiment, he falls back to the realm of the helpless beast."
