Hedy Lamarr was married at 19 to a weapons manufacturer who hosted engineers at dinner. She was expected to sit there looking decorative while they discussed torpedoes and radio jamming.

Everyone at that table assumed she was not listening. She remembered all of it.

By 1940 she was in Hollywood and wanted to help with the war. What she and the composer George Antheil worked out was a way to stop a radio-guided torpedo being jammed. Have the transmitter and receiver jump together between many frequencies, in a pattern only they share. Nobody can block what will not sit still. Their method for keeping the two in step came from a player piano.

They were granted a US patent in 1942 and gave it to the Navy, which shelved it. Lamarr was told the most useful thing she could do was sell war bonds, so she went and did that, raising millions.

She never earned anything from the patent. It expired in the late 1950s.

Frequency hopping is now everywhere. Your wifi, your bluetooth, your phone moving between towers mid-call, GPS. All of it rests on transmissions that keep changing frequency so they cannot be blocked or crowded out.

One honest note, because the story gets told too neatly. Others were circling the same idea, a Caltech engineer helped draft the patent, and the player-piano mechanism would have been unworkable in an actual battle.

What is not in dispute is that she solved it, patented it, handed it over, and was told the best use of her was selling war bonds.
