Official today: Capital Weather is independent once again.
Twenty-two years after launching Capital Weather as an independent weather website for the DC area — and 18 years after first partnering with The Washington Post and becoming the Capital Weather Gang — we are independent again.
Today, we’re officially launching a new chapter at https://t.co/r3dKxepf5m and on our new mobile app. We are committed to making our core forecasts and updates free and accessible to everyone. Your support will make this possible.
Here is what we’ve built and how you can support us.
What we’ve built:
☀️ Around-the-clock forecasts and live updates
📧 Expanded newsletters
📱 A new Capital Weather app
🌦️ Interactive weather and climate tools
💬 A stronger community experience
🎙️ We will continue to provide forecasts on WAMU 88.5
How you can boost and sustain our independent launch:
• Support our work at https://t.co/jh1PQK6W7Q
• Download the Capital Weather app on iOS or Android
• Make Capital Weather your everyday weather source
• Share this post with friends and family across the DMV
Some of you have already joined our community and we could not be more grateful.
Since pioneering digital local weather coverage in 2004, we’ve believed weather is something we all experience together. Your questions, storm reports, photos, and conversations have helped shape Capital Weather into one of the nation’s leading regional weather communities.
Our mission remains the same as always: to be the most trusted everyday source for DC-area weather forecasts, breaking updates, and in-depth weather and climate news.
From sunny days to stormy days — and from Snowmageddon (2010) to Snowcrete (2026) — it’s been an incredible ride.
Thank you for being part of this community. We’re incredibly excited for what’s ahead.
If you live in DC, *please* take this DC Office of Planning survey on the Future Land Use Map. This plan in no way rises to the current housing supply needs of the city, and they should hear that message loud and clear.

ICE! Not just on your roads...but on most rivers and the Bay! 🧊🥶
The northern part of the Chesapeake Bay (where it is shallower) is frozen over...which much of the Potomac River around DC is as well!
Fun fact: Even if not a single person in Fairfax, Loudon, Prince William, Falls Church, Arlington, and Alexandria Counties had voted, Spanberger still would've won by 87,677 votes.
It was not close. She didn't even need NoVa.
DC is one of the few cities in the nation that offers free, universal pre-K3 and pre-K4.
We're proud to report that 82% of all 3-year-olds and 95% of all 4-year-olds in DC are enrolled.
The national averages are 7% and 35%.
NEW: Metro asking for $2 million to study potential transit upgrades around the RFK stadium site. This could include a new station altogether and a tunnel that connects to a new “riverfront district” at the site. @nbcwashington#wmata
Today, @HitachiRailENG held a ribbon cutting for their new 300k sq ft manufacturing facility in MD where our 8000-series trains will be built (check out that winning livery design 🤩)! Thank you to our Board Members, @LTGovMiller, & all our partners who’ve supported this project.
I’m running for reelection for DC Attorney General.
In my first term, our office has fought for workers, for consumers, for tenants and for our environment.
I’m continuing this fight for the rights, safety, and values of every District resident.
A news tidbit: Next month D.C. is launching its long-delayed database of rent-controlled housing units. Documentation related to tens of thousands of rent-controlled units exists mostly in paper, making it hard for people to find housing and know whether rent-control applies.
