Brazilian skydiver Luigi Cani executed a bold and ambitious reforestation mission by dropping over 100 million tree seeds from the sky over a heavily deforested section of the Amazon rainforest.

In 2022, Cani jumped from 6,500 feet (approximately 2,000 meters) and released seeds from 27 native Amazonian tree species. The seeds were packed inside a specially designed biodegradable container that burst open mid-air, scattering them evenly across a 31,000-square-foot (nearly 2,900 m²) area.

Cani spent five years collaborating with environmental scientists to carefully select viable seeds and ensure they were ecologically suitable for the region. The project proved highly successful, achieving a remarkable 95% germination rate, offering genuine hope for forest regeneration.

A skydiving legend with 11 world records and more than 14,000 jumps, Cani described the mission as one of the most meaningful experiences of his life.

This innovative aerial seeding effort has been celebrated as a creative and impactful way to combat deforestation in the Amazon.
