Dear House officers,
As a fellow colleague, this hit me hard.
People will say, "It was his time" maybe,but that doesn't mean we shouldn't ask difficult questions.
I've learned one painful lesson during housemanship in Nigeria,nobody will protect your health better than you.
If I'm burning out, constantly exhausted, or developing symptoms that don't feel right, I leave. Sometimes with permission, sometimes after informing the necessary people if I genuinely can't continue.
There was a time I disappeared for three days because I knew something wasn't right with my body. Looking back, I don't regret choosing my health.
The truth is, hospitals keep running, rosters get adjusted,new house officers arrive everyday. You can be replaced at work far quicker than you can be replaced at home.
To every house officer reading this,your patients matter, your training matters,but your life matters too. Don't ignore persistent symptoms because you're afraid of being called lazy or unserious.
Medicine is a noble profession, but it should never require you to sacrifice your own health in silence.

I write this with pain in my heart.

On April 23, 2026, I bought a car on loan after trading in my former car, which had become a constant source of problems. I still had an outstanding balance of ₦4.5 million to pay.

On April 28, 2026, I was taken away by the Nigerian Army under the guise of DSS officials. For three days in their custody, I was subjected to treatment that left deep scars on me physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Throughout those three days, I remained handcuffed and blindfolded. During the day, I was left under the scorching sun for hours without water. I begged and cried for water, but nobody gave me any. At night, I was kept in an extremely cold room where I would cry and plead for help, but no one responded. I also received random slaps from unidentified individuals.

Even after the court granted me bail, the trauma did not end. I still wake up suddenly at night, struggling to sleep as memories of those days continue to haunt me.

What breaks my heart even more is that the car I bought on loan was damaged. Sometimes I ask myself: what exactly did I do to deserve such treatment?

My only “offence” was speaking up and asking that my brothers and sisters serving in the military should be properly fed and cared for.

Today, I can truly say that Nigeria happened to me.

But despite everything, one thing remains certain:

Justice can never be cracked.

I’m honestly shocked.

Because if this patient throws an embolus and is rushed to a facility without oxygen, ICU support, or even access to proper imaging, Doctors will be blamed for “negligence.”

Meanwhile, she has already been exposed to significant risk outside the hospital.

Let’s be clear about what the risks here
– Sepsis
– Embolism
– Transmission of infection
– Thrombophlebitis / thrombosis
– Severe blood loss (yes, even that)

And by the time she presents,
the situation is no longer straightforward.

It is already complicated.

But when things go wrong,
we reduce everything to one sentence:
“Doctors were negligent.”

No. The patient was first seen by a quack.

Not every bad outcome starts in the hospital, but that’s where the blame goes.

It is quite unfortunate that officers of the Nigerian Military will resort to physically assaulting a Doctor at his duty post in the Accident and Emergency Unit of COOUTH in Anambra State.

When it has gotten to a point where even defenders of the sovereignty of Nigeria see Doctors as punching bags, we must acknowledge as a Nation that something is wrong.

This will not go viral and ganer the much needed attention and action, but when NARD declares a Solidarity Strike on behalf of our battered colleague until the needful is done, you begin to hear voices of reason.

The Nigerian Resident Doctor it appears is becoming an endangered specie very rapidly, Nigeria and Nigerians should rise up to defend Healthcare workers.
