Tthere must exist such an exemplar, whether real or imaginary.

If this be called a fiction, then it is at least a noble fiction. And if such lie did not exist, it would be necessary that it should be invented.

Fortunately for mankind, it is not, in fact, a fiction at all. The Greeks did, in their historical existence, surpass even the ideal in which modern imagination has chosen to venerate them.

They were greater than we suppose, even when we imagine we are in the act of praising them, and their civilsation should continue be viewed witih reverent awe.

I reject the "Truth" posited by Christ entirely for all of the reasons I stated above.

But instead of talking directly, they filter everything through the ideological filter, so we all end up talking about nonsense as the Churches rule.

The West has been becoming less Christian over the Centuries ever since rediscovering the pagan Greeks, ironically through contact with the Islamic world. The so-called Islamic "golden age" was spawned when they discovered the Greeks. Hmm...
