The $3 Gold Princess is the only U.S. coin of it's denomination, minted from 1854-1889 with under 540,000 made. It aimed to simplify purchases of 3-cent postage stamps.
Many were melted in the 1933 gold recall, making remaining coins increasingly rare.
The U.S. has the largest gold reserves at 8,133 metric tons, followed by Germany with 3,351 and Italy with 2,452 metric tons (WGC, 2025).
Despite it's ability to print unlimited dollars, the U.S. retains the world's largest gold stockpile.
America's first $20 gold coin, the Liberty Head Double Eagle, was authorized in 1849 during the California Gold Rush.
Minted until 1907, it contains 0.9675 oz of gold and is rare due to low mintages and melting, particularly from Carson City and San Francisco mints.
The government prints currency whenever needed. Gold, however, can never be printed.
That's real value.
