That context helps, and I agree Proverbs 23 gives no warrant for a man to use violence against his wife. A wife is not a child under the rod, and Scripture commands husbands to love, nourish, cherish, and honour their wives.
So yes, using these verses to justify throwing broken scissors at a wife’s face is wicked proof-texting.
Keep up the good fight.
I agree that the passage should not be read as merciless violence. That is not what I am proposing.
But your answer still does not deal with the actual wording. Proverbs 23:13–14 is not about sheep. It says “the child.” The context is correction. The verb is נכה — nākâ, meaning to strike/smite/beat. It does not mean guide.
Also, shebet is not exclusively a sheep rod. In Proverbs itself, the rod is repeatedly connected with correction, discipline, and the backs of fools, not merely shepherding imagery. So the immediate wisdom-literature context matters more than an imported sheep analogy.
The proper balance is this: Proverbs 23 is not commanding abuse, rage, injury, or merciless beating. But it is also not merely saying “gently guide the child like a sheep.” The text plainly describes measured painful physical correction.
I accept your limit. Do you accept the verb action?
But Proverbs 23:13–14 is not talking about sheep anyway. It says “the child.” The action is not “guide him with the rod,” but “beatest him with the rod.” The Hebrew verb is nākâ, which means to strike or smite. It is not the normal word for guiding or shepherding.
So we can and should define proper limits, severity, or application of the passage, but you cannot honestly make it say “tap a sheep back into the fold.”
The text is plainly about physical corrective discipline of a child. Pain is involved. The phrase “he shall not die” shows restraint and non-injury, not that the action is merely symbolic guidance.
Psalm 116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
John’s faith is now sight. Praise be to God.
