The ‘Stranger Things’ star has previously spoken out about LGBTQ+ representation in the Netflix series, pushing back against the idea that queer people weren’t visible in the 1980s.

Speaking to Attitude in 2025 ahead of the final season’s release, Matarazzo said:

“Sometimes people that are critical of [queerness and allyship] bring it up with, like, ‘That didn’t happen in the 80s.’ I’m like, it didn’t happen to you because no one felt comfortable telling you. There were out gay people constantly in the 80s… Queer culture existed in the 80s; you didn’t happen to be a part of it.”
