It was truly humbling to get the opportunity to stop by the grave of my great-grandmother’s brother, Robert Hillen at Thistle Dump Cemetery. It is a small cemetery surrounded by fields of wheat. Incredibly quiet. The resting place of this young man, not much more than a boy, from Aughnacloy. He fell on the 1st July 1916, the very first day of the Battle of the Somme.

He never has the opportunity to marry and have children, his life cut off on the battle fields of the Somme 110 years ago today. Like so many young men. He has no grandchild or great-grandchild to lay a wreath - so it is incredibly important to remember these boys, all those young men. It was such an honour to be able to lay a wreath for him.

Robert, you are remembered. Thank you for your service.

In the early hours of this morning, I directed our Armed Forces to intercept a shadow fleet oil tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel.

This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin's war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide.

Truly horrific scenes in North Belfast last night. This was a shocking and brutal act of violence.

My thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with the victim of this savage and barbaric attack.

This act of hatred has no place in our society, and certainly no place on the streets of Northern Ireland. People have a right to feel safe in their community, and there can be absolutely no tolerance for such barbaric violence.

Those responsible must face the full consequences of their actions.

I will be in contact with the Chief Constable this morning to request a full update. It is vital that the police provide clear and open communication as this situation develops.

I urge calm in what is clearly a tense and worrying situation.
