I want to congratulate Prime Minister Trudeau on his time in office, and wish him well.

He served our country through tumultuous times. Whatever disagreements we have had, his love for Canada is always evident.

One of Prime Minister Trudeau’s last acts in office was to sign an Order in Council making some very meaningful changes to the way the banking industry applies non-sufficient fund (NSF) fees. The imminent changes include:

➡️ Capping NSF fees at 10$.

➡️ No NSF charges within 2 business days of eachother.

➡️ Require banks to alert clients when their account balances fall below zero.

➡️ Require banks to publicly disclose the amount of NSF fees charged, the number of clients impacted, and their total annual revenue from these fees.

Having seen firsthand how a client can get wrapped up in stacking NSF fees, I am happy to see this small but impactful change to our banking regulations.

With affordability being top of mind going into an imminent federal election, this may be the first of more discussions on changes to the finance industry and their relationship with consumers.
