@mikeybigD same! my fairly small city had not one but two greek orthodox churches! i’m (mostly) italian/irish myself and nearly all the whites i grew up with were greeks, irish, slavs, and italians. that’s who worked in the steel mills and settled the adjacent neighborhoods

i’m from a county on this map that is green but the rotting rust belt city i grew up in was all catholic of irish and italian extraction (the white folks anyway). this is a true rural/urban divide i think. the urban areas are not german. holmes county? sure. stark? nah.

The craziest part of growing up in the northeast is finding out knowing a ton of Irish and Italians is actually not standard for the United States.

@ZuzyQTPi @MaacTheft yes! the rust belt inner cities (i’m from a city two counties west of youngstown) have that mix. i don’t remember many german names in my class growing up (2000s). the english last names even generally belonged to black folks. the white were all italian, irish, slavic, greek.
