Today marks four years since the Kanjuruhan tragedy.
The disaster was triggered by excessive police use of tear gas, which violated FIFA’s stadium safety regulations during post-match clashes between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya. This led to mass panic and a deadly stampede as spectators rushed toward narrow, locked exits, causing severe asphyxiation, leaving 135 people dead and hundreds injured. It remains the second-deadliest stadium disaster in football history.
