At 1:24 in the morning, two police officers rang the bell at a Boston museum. The night guard let them in.
81 minutes later they drove away with 13 works of art, including a Rembrandt and a Vermeer, worth about $500 million.
They weren't police.
36 years later the case is still unsolved, and the museum keeps the empty frames hanging on the wall.
In 1943 a homeless Welshman died in London after eating rat poison.
Three months later he washed up in Spain as a British major, with love letters in his pocket and secret war plans chained to his wrist.
The Germans believed every word and moved troops to Greece.
The major never existed. The man who fooled Hitler had been sleeping rough in London.
@BleacherReport Space Jam had him as one of the NBA guys whose talent got stolen by aliens. Meanwhile in real life a 5'3" man once blocked Patrick Ewing. Who's also in Space Jam.
@unusual_whales Brent's record is still about $147, back in July 2008. That was the same summer US gas went past $4 a gallon for the first time. Everyone remembers the pump price, nobody remembers the barrel.
Joining Amazon Prime took one or two clicks.
Leaving took four pages, six clicks and fifteen options.
Inside Amazon, the cancel process had a codename: "Iliad".
Homer's epic about a war that took ten years to end.
Those blurry words you typed to prove you're human were real words from old books that computers couldn't read.
People solved about 200 million of them a day, for free.
Then Google bought it and swapped the words for house numbers and traffic lights.
You weren't proving you're human. You were training the thing that won't need you.
That's from the FTC's 2023 lawsuit, which said the flow ran from 2016. In September 2025 Amazon settled for $2.5 billion, including $1.5 billion in refunds for about 35 million customers, and agreed that cancelling must be as easy as signing up. Nobody names a maze after an epic war by accident.
The man who invented it, Luis von Ahn, worked out that the world was spending about 500,000 hours a day on those boxes. His next company was Duolingo, which at first had learners translate real web pages while they practised. Same trick, nicer app.
I still keep the key to the house I grew up in. Another family has lived there for eleven years. It doesn't open anything anymore. I just can't throw away the last thing that knew the way home.
