The Cambodian army tried to protect civilians, including women, children and the elderly, who were arrested during the protests. Through this protective role, the soldiers ensured that the villagers escaped more serious injury, albeit at significant personal cost. The incident drew attention to the human toll of rising tensions along the border, showing how both civilians and military personnel are at risk when conflicts are resolved through force rather than dialogue.
