A message to Muslims:

Remember that little Syrian boy whose body washed up on a beach?

Remember the images from Syria? Cities reduced to rubble. Children pulled from buildings. Millions driven from their homes. Torture, massacres, chemical attacks, barrel bombs and one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes of our generation.

Remember how many Western leftists spoke endlessly about Syrian suffering? About refugees, humanity and solidarity?

Now look at their reaction as Syria rebuilds.

More than 3.5 million displaced Syrians have returned home since Assad’s murderous regime fell. Syria is rebuilding its institutions, re-entering international diplomacy and trying to move beyond fourteen years of war.

And suddenly, the tone changes.

The Syrians they claimed to care about were apparently easier to love as refugees, victims and images on a screen than as people rebuilding a sovereign, functioning country.

Now Syria’s recovery itself seems to offend them.

That should teach Muslims something important:

Solidarity that only exists while you are suffering is not solidarity.

Some people don’t actually want Muslim societies prospering on their own terms. They want causes. Imagery. Permanent struggles they can observe from afar and fit neatly into their ideological worldview.

Look at the narratives about Syria now:

“Syria is ruled by al-Qaeda.”

“Syria is ruled by ISIS.”

About a man whose forces spent years fighting both ISIS and al-Qaeda in Syria and dismantling their presence in territory he controlled.

This isn’t obscure information. Five minutes of research would tell them.

But they don’t care. The labels are more useful than the facts.

They claim to despise imperialism, expansionism and foreign interference.
But Iran expanding its power across Syria, Lebanon and Yemen, embedding armed proxies and militias inside Arab states and subordinating their sovereignty to Tehran’s regional ambitions? Apparently that’s neither imperialism nor expansionism to them.

But Syrians building an independent, functioning and prosperous country?

Suddenly they have a problem with it.

From thousands of miles away, it’s a geopolitical video game. You can watch armed militias carve up other people’s countries when you when you’ll never have to live with the consequences. Syrians do.

They don’t have to live among ruins. Bury the dead. Become refugees. Watch their children grow up knowing nothing but war.

And that is what Muslims need to understand. Some people are far more comfortable with Muslims as victims than with Muslims possessing agency.

They know how to pity you.

They don’t know what to do when you no longer need their pity.

And ask yourself: if they cannot celebrate Syrians emerging from fourteen years of killing, torture, displacement and destruction, what makes you think they’ll celebrate Palestinians when Gaza emerges from a genocide and begins rebuilding?

Remember this when it comes to Palestine.

One day, inshallah, Gaza will be rebuilt. Families will rebuild their homes. Businesses will reopen. Children will grow up without bombs falling over their heads. Palestinians will build institutions and pursue prosperity rather than survival.

And then Palestinians will stop existing primarily as images of suffering on Western screens. They will make decisions for themselves, pursue their own interests and exercise their own agency.

Watch what happens then.

The people who performatively mourn with you are not necessarily the people who want to see you rise.

Because solidarity that demands Muslims remain broken to remain worthy of sympathy is not solidarity at all.
