UN University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa(UNU-INRA) promotes sustainable management of Africa's natural resources through research & policy advice
He’s here!
Our new Director, @RichardMunang has assumed office.
After an introductory meeting with @UNUINRA staff,he shared his vision for the institution.
He also paid a courtesy visit to @UnivGh_VC, @aba_amfo,to share his vision & discuss potential collaborations.
Akwaaba!
Danke! @DAAD_GHANA for welcoming @UNUINRA today.
We look forward to adding @DAAD_GHANA funded researchers,to our network of College of Research Associates & guiding some of these researchers, with methodologies that align their work to drive policies, relevant to African states.
If our forefathers depleted & destroyed our natural resources, human life & civilization would have lost our basic survival systems.
Our work is to influence decisions through evidence-based data, that helps Africa manage its natural assets sustainably, for future generations.
With high rates of youth unemployment, Africa’s youth can capitalize on Waste Exchange, while promoting sustainability.
This trading system involves exchanging waste materials(e.g plastics, fashion waste,e-waste)for a fee, to other parties, who repurpose these waste materials.
Africa does not need to be told what it is worth. It needs to count what it has, keep more of it, convert it into work, and let the money circulate among its own people.
Africa needs to know the value of the natural resources(minerals)it has, measure what is kept within the continent after extraction, and measure the health bill, land bill, water bill, repair bill…
These bills measure the true impact of extraction on communities and people.
More than 77% of the world's cobalt comes from Africa, the metal behind the batteries AI runs on.
How many cents of every dollar stay home?
Our Director, Dr. @RichardMunang Munang, asks in today's @bftghana.
Africa is not poor. Africa is uncounted.

Africa is endowed with 30% of the world’s critical mineral reserves, exported and used for producing electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, digital infrastructure & modern electronics.
@UNUINRA’s goal is to count/determine the value of the minerals, kept within the Africa.
After our successful INFoCAT(sponsored by @IDRC_CRDI 🇨🇦)project, we aim to strengthen ties with @CanHCGhana, by providing evidence based-data, to inform how we manage natural resources sustainably, while creating livelihoods & proactively preparing 🇬🇭 for impacts of climate-risks.
Water is life!💧
For Ghana and Africa,to effectively plan development & the well-being of its people,we need evidence based data that drives decisions on planning & policy implementation on the use, distribution & management of our water resources.
🤝Water Resources Commission
This week,we met with the Commissioner of Customs Division
Mr. Aaron Kanor Ag. & his team, to discuss collaboration around capacity training & development, for its Green Customs initiative & providing evidence based data, to enhance the sustainability of 🇬🇭 Customs’ operations.
Today @UNUINRA met with the
@GhanaGOLDBOD team, to discuss areas of collaboration around sustainable mining(using evidence based data)and being able to calculate the repair bill, health bill, land bill amongst other gaps,to determine the real value of gold kept in the country.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., has received a delegation from the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA), led by its Director, Dr. @RichardMunang . The engagement focused on sustainability and opportunities for collaboration towards protecting and restoring Ghana’s environment.
During the meeting, GoldBod highlighted its ongoing environmental interventions, including the reclamation of 50 hectares of degraded land in the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve and the rehabilitation of three Ghana Water Limited treatment plants serving over 76 communities and about 100,000 people. Dr. Richard Munang commended GoldBod for its commitment to environmental restoration, while Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., welcomed further collaboration with UNU-INRA to advance shared sustainability goals.
The solutions for Africa’s transformation needs evidence.”
-Dr. @RichardMunang(Director, UNU-INRA)
This evidence -based data, is what can shape the decisions around managing our natural resources, for the continent’s prosperity.
Stay tuned!
Join our Research fellow, Barbara Baidoo and other experts on @metrotvgh as they reflect on Ghana’s SDG progress, remaining gaps and the collective action required from government, businesses, academia, civil society, the media & citizens.

“Natural resources are not the problem. The decisions made around natural resources, are the problem.”
Dr. @RichardMunang Munang (Director, @UNUINRA ).
What we need to focus on, is how these decisions work well, so Africa’s natural resources can benefit its people.
A fruitful meeting at @UnivofGh’s Institute of Environment & Sanitation Studies(@IESS_UG)!
Together,we aim to co-supervise Graduate students & provide evidence based data to train & build capacities of @UnivofGh students, government & member state reps & private institutions.
