Music, travel, the internet -- all these things were better 30 years ago. Probably because the barriers to entry were just right. You had to put in a little effort and maybe know a few people who could introduce you to the relevant subculture.

It's honestly hard to describe what it was like playing around on the internet back in the mid-90s. It could be tedious and slow, but the of community of people involved was rather small, unregulated, and largely unmonetized. It genuinely felt like exploration.
