love this new feature on the mobile app where the navigation bar is semi-transparent when you’re scrolling so you can’t fully see destinations nor content. more great design ideas from elon and co!
@ezkl2515@chrislhayes there’s no law against “criticizing the president in a foreign country,” people burned Dixie Chicks albums. that’s straight up cult behavior. people were writing contemporaneous articles about Bush’s personality cult at the time. it was an actual thing whether you agree or not
@ezkl2515@chrislhayes Trump is a much more pernicious personality cult but Bush absolutely had one. as someone else mentioned, the Dixie Chicks got death threats for criticizing him and chased out of the music business. Ezra Klein called it as much all the way back in 2005: https://t.co/2SDLAHaxNI
@ezkl2515@chrislhayes Bush absolutely had a personality cult going from 9/11 to around 2005 when the wheels started coming off due to Iraq, Katrina, and failed Social Security privatization. mostly forgotten now
@KweenPeen@laserloony@thejolson I don’t disagree with your second point, but you can absolutely get hiring managers to rethink these things. happens all the time. I got HR people at my job to stop obsessing over thank you notes
@JohnSmithordf9@kybercastiel lots of job interview “rules” have easily explainable reasons for their existence. if someone can’t easily articulate the purpose of a rule then the rule might simply be arbitrary
@AprilTurtle_ major issue is that many people are just parroting employment advice they were told/that was relevant when they were young so they treat it like unassailable dogma instead of variable, context/industry-dependent norms
@Robert_mac88@marielatrasi Yes and my response was “that’s fine but it is worth asking hiring managers to explain why something is relevant. that they often have no answer they can easily provide is sometimes eye opening to them”
@Nrgill1@HazrdousWaste@gaymergir I am employed, I’ve never brought a cover letter to an interview, haven’t brought a resume since the late 2000s, and my “Sunday best” is not appropriate for my industry
@Robert_mac88@marielatrasi they asked “why is it such a big deal to say it’s all some of you would focus on to the point of not hiring someone” which is exactly what I have been talking about this entire thread. why is it? nobody can answer
@Robert_mac88@marielatrasi and these inquiries are how minds are changed. I once got someone in HR to stop expecting post interview thank you notes because I simply asked why she thought she was entitled to one
@Robert_mac88@marielatrasi I haven’t missed your point, my advice to candidates is always “do what gets you the job.” I just want a hiring manager to explain why they care about these things
@Robert_mac88@marielatrasi again you’re making it about the candidate, I’m asking why is it so important to the hiring manager if there’s a coffee there. if the answer is “I work in x industry and the norm is nobody drinks iced coffees” fine. if the answer is “because I don’t like it,” then that’s silly
@Robert_mac88@marielatrasi that’s fine but it is worth asking hiring managers to explain why something is relevant. that they often have no answer they can easily provide is sometimes eye opening to them
