I got a lot of replies saying I'm an idiot for saying Tim Hortons and Canadian Tire were a part of Canadian culture.

It's too bad, because if you grew up in the 80s and 90s, Tim's was a place you could go where you felt welcomed. There would always be a group of old folks hanging around and talking about the weather. You'd see a group of policemen sitting and laughing. You could get a hot chocolate or an actual good cup of coffee and doughnut or timbits made in-store and served hot and fresh. They didn't have crappy fast food. You'd be served by a local kid paying for school or lady earning extra money for her family. There was a good chance you knew the owner and you were supporting a Canadian company started by an ex-hockey player.

Canadian Tire was a place where you'd go with your dad to pick up supplies for a project you were helping him with around the house. After you bought what you needed he'd hand you the Canadian Tire money which you'd add to your pile and count until you had enough saved up to go hang out with your friend in the sports section and buy a new stick for street hockey. Again, they hired locally and you were supporting a Canadian owned company.

Both were examples of Canadian success stories.

Yes, it's true that there was much more to Canadian identity than what stores you patronized, but they are examples of how our national identity is being eroded away.

People used to seem to have so much more pride in being Canadian back then.
