@dandouglas Years ago I was at the cinema with a friend during the day, maybe 2 or 3 other people dotted around, nobody near us. We spread out, and I tossed my jacket over the back of the seat in front of me. Which was of course occupied, and I had just covered a man's head with my jacket.

@sonicated @EmilyKerr36 There is the slightly subtle point that fewer deaths does not necessarily mean safer. Cars are safer for drivers & passengers, but is it possible that any reduction in child pedestrian deaths may be due to the fact that children don't play in the street in the way they used to.

@hugh_jolley @catouticensis @RichardWellings Not quite, 36% list the bike as their most frequent way of getting around, hinting that of the other 64%, quite a few will regularly cycle.

Also, most UK towns are largely flat. Switzerland is not, yet has a higher cycling rate than UK, suggesting hilliness is only one factor.

You have the right to apply for a driving licence and sit a test, but if you fail, you can't drive. Similarly, the Government can withdraw your license for a number of reasons. That's not really a right.

@CleaRomeo @laura_laker @WatsonWatF They may be benefits to passenger safety, but is this outweighed by increased risk to other road users? If I am to be hit by a car, I'd far rather be hit by a Fiat 500 than a Land Rover. Also, there is the amount of road & parking space they take, & the increased damage to roads.

If SUVs are all about practicality, why are there so many more driving about Chelsea than in rural Argyll? I think we should be a little honest and acknowledge that that buying an SUV is partly about social status.

@LauraHAllain @digitaldaisies @guardian @harrietgrant I think we don't realise how much cars have changed the streetscape for children, even over the last few years. Ok, there were always cars, but far fewer. A 50% increase in cars on UK roads since the mid 90s. We've allowed cars to completely dominate so many public spaces.

@Iamegriff @guardiannews If it's dangerous, it's because it's been allowed to become dangerous. I'm not that old, yet spent my childhood playing on the street & the road. Fewer cars, slower cars & smaller cars. A level of freedom and safety now denied to children as we've let cars to take precedence.

@hackaday No photos, probably luckily. At university, 4th year projects, my classmate builds a lie detector and attaches the probes to himself to test... Cue some 2nd degree burns and a trip to A&E. Only the bravest of the brave study electronics engineering.
