Either a juvenile or an adult male because males don’t grow very big. Alabama has over 5 different species of map turtles in the state.

Here is a SEM photo of a diatom (I believe of the genus Luticola) that were sampled from a turtle shell. #diatoms #urbanturtles #alabamaisforturtles

A lot to learn, but I believe the diatom in the lower part of the picture is from the genus Encyonema.

Chicken turtles are so interesting. This photo shows the long necks that this species has, which they utilize in their suction feeding to catch aquatic insects. Excited to have this new project with them. #alabamaisforturtles

Fecal samples can provide interesting data on feeding ecology of animals. But, when I recaptured AST #4000 back in June, she gave me a very interesting sample. It contained bones of a recently ingested adult stripe-necked musk turtle. #apexpredator #turtleseatingturtles
