The Nigerian jollof we all love, the one with the stew base is Yoruba jollof actually.

I’ve eaten Hausa jollof in the early 90s somewhere in Lagos, Igbos too have their version but the now widely celebrated Nigeria jollof is of Yoruba invention.

Some of you lack critical thinking skills so I’m going to hold your hand

Nigerians didn’t meet somewhere in a conference and decided this is the version of rice we’re going to call Nigerian jollof rice, it became popular because the Yoruba people made it all the time in their parties like weddings or burial ceremonies which gave it its first name like burial jollof or party jollof

Except we’re going to lie here but until recently a higher percentage of party cooks for hire use to be Yoruba women with big arms, we exported the version all over Nigeria and it stuck

Also note that every culture adds their favourite ingredient to their jollof, so the Northernes added a lot of ginger and Igbos of course added crayfish and I’m not saying this version wasn’t delicious, in fact that Hausa Jollof stayed with me forever

We didn’t meet somewhere to decide the Nigerian Jollof, there were different versions but one came out on top to rule them all. Ire o
