I hold @syedhadimoosavi Sahab, a friend and a highly learned scholar who I have been deeply inspired by, in very high esteem.

He is somebody who is respected across sectarian divides and has used the Mimber-e-Rasool (SAW) in its true, intended way - to speak about injustice, betrayals and the state of the people in the face of tyranny.

He marked a welcome departure by speaking truth to power and refusing to be silenced into the palatable, traditional space where our scholars don’t speak about the rulers and stay in their lane.

And by doing so, he instilled hope.

Our political disempowerment is rooted in the collapse of our social and religious institutions. Even by remaining silent, our social and religious institutions have absolved themselves of their duty to speak up. You cannot divorce the Mimber from the state of being of Muslims in a society,

If there is one Khutbah that comes to my mind, in my humble and ignorant capacity, it is the Khutbah-e-Mina delivered by Imam Hassan (AS) on Shawwal Dhu al Hijjah 1410. The sermon delves on the duties that are incumbent upon the fuqaha' such as the struggle against oppressors and tyrannical governments.

I want to quote a part of the Khutbah (from from al Tawhid, p. 34, Vol. VII No. 4):

“O scholars, who are celebrated and enjoy good repute on account of your learning! You have achieved a good name in society because of your good will. It is on account of God that men venerate you and stand in awe of you, so that even powerful fear you and the weak honour you, and those who are not subject to you and over whom you hold no authority grant you favours they deny themselves . When the people do not receive their due. they seek your intercession, and you walk in the street with the majesty of kings and princes.
Have you not earned all this respect and prestige because of the people's hopes that you will implement God's laws, even though in most instances you have failed to do so?”

It was THIS very spirit and essence of the Khutbah-e-Mina that formed the bedrock of @syedhadimoosavi’s series of sermons that laid bare the betrayals and U-turns of the National Conference with the hapless people of Kashmir. And it was a breath of fresh air — the pulpit finally being used most eloquently to voice the angst of people in the face of the brazen arrogance of the incumbent rulers.

I have written this post very reluctantly. As I always say, my affection for @syedhadimoosavi is unconditional and my respect for him as a religious scholar is beyond doubt or question.

That said, as a Kashmiri, I would humbly take the liberty of suggesting that Hadi Sahab now abstains from speaking about the political condition of the people after the current by-elections in Budgam are over. It would be painful for me to even consider that Hadi Sahab’s criticism of the Government is defined by anything but his principles and ideals and can be muted depending on current political circumstances.

I have always respected him with all my heart and will continue to do so. One understands his compulsions in the current circumstances with Aga Mahmood Sahab in the fray as an NC candidate, but Hadi Sahab is a thought-leader and scholar whose voice goes far beyond Budgam and should not have been constrained, neither because of family, nor because of Budgam.

May Allah SWT guide us all.
