The memories of war have a way of resurfacing, often unexpectedly, pulling us back into moments we thought were long buried. When I read that Dr. Georges Freiha had passed away, I was immediately transported to the time I spent at the Off-Campus Program (OCP) of the @AUB_Lebanon before I joined the main campus where my life took another leap. Those two semesters, shaped by the intensity of both the academic rigor and the volatile times, remain vivid in my memory- much like Dr. Freiha himself.
Dr. Georges Freiha was not just a professor; he was a bridge between the academic world and the tumultuous reality we lived in. He married Viviane Gemayel, the daughter of Maurice Gemayel, a figure whose influence and legacy still resonate today. Maurice Gemayel’s vision for Lebanon was one of resilience and progress, values that Dr. Freiha carried forward in his work and in the way he nurtured the minds of so many students.
It was through President Bachir Gemayel that the idea of the Off-Campus Program (OCP) took shape in the Eastern zone of Beirut, offering a lifeline to students during some of Lebanon’s darkest days, days when students were kidnapped. He served as the director of the program from 1980 with just 70 students, growing it into a vibrant community of over 1,600 by the time he left in 1993. The OCP wasn’t just an academic program; it was a sanctuary for learning, a beacon of hope, and a testament to the commitment to education.
As we remember Dr. Freiha, I wonder if any of those who studied at the OCP alongside me would have memories to share anecdotes that capture the essence of those days. If you have something to share, I would love to read it. Let’s honor him by keeping those memories alive.
@KLM overbooked the flight and decided to cancel my ticket after check-in! There is no solution on the check-in desk nor the airline is accepting to talk on the phone or have a customer service office!!!
