Today is my last day in the best job in medicine you’d probably never heard of. I could not be more grateful for the day @PowerUSAID asked me to lead global health at USAID. I was given a chance for impact on a scale I never fathomed.
Thank you to @USAIDGH’s extraordinary team.
Under @GawandeUSAID's helm, we have:
✅Distributed ~700 million COVID vaccines 💉 to 120+ countries
✅Responded to 21 deadly viral outbreaks
✅Launched Primary Impact to accelerate primary health care
Grateful to have accomplished so much together.
USAID’s Primary Impact effort has been instrumental in accelerating coverage for primary health care, which delivers 90% of a person’s lifetime health needs, in multiple countries around the world 🗺️. When we help countries invest in PHC, they drive progress in health.
In today's world, the demand for a robust policy to guide @USAID’s global health development work has never been more urgent. That’s why we released our new policy using a comprehensive, community-based approach so our programs are accessible by all:

River blindness is caused by tiny parasites carried by blackflies that are located near fast-moving rivers. Once in the body, infection can cause relentlessly itchy skin, impaired eyesight, and even blindness.

@USAID@USAIDAsia@WorldHealthSmt@usaid_india@UN@usaid_manila@theGFF USAID’s work championing primary health care and helping countries bolster their health systems is paying off. At the @NewYorkerFest, I explained why strong primary health care improves health outcomes and leads to healthier, longer lives. Our discussion:

@USAID@USAIDAsia@WorldHealthSmt@usaid_india@UN@usaid_manila It wouldn’t be a complete list for 2024 without noting our incredible partnership 🤝 with @theGFF to strengthen primary health care and reduce inequities in life expectancy in low- and middle-income countries.

@USAID@USAIDAsia@WorldHealthSmt@usaid_india@UN Our partnership 🤝with the #Philippines 🇵🇭🇺🇸 has helped to strengthen #PrimaryHealthCare and enable Filipinos’ access to quality & affordable services. USAID is supporting the gov’s roll-out of primary care provider networks to improve quality of life across the country.
@USAID@USAIDAsia@WorldHealthSmt@usaid_india@UN At #WHA77, it was apparent how far the global health community has come. Life expectancy increased to 70 yrs & there’s consensus that everyone everywhere has a right to achieve their max potential thru primary health care—a priority around the world. 🌏

@USAID@USAIDAsia@WorldHealthSmt@usaid_india At #UNGA79 I spoke alongside Mentor Mother Bupe Sinkala about how critical health care workers are to primary health care delivery because they are the first contact a patient has for a medical issue or disease prevention.
@USAID@USAIDAsia@WorldHealthSmt@usaid_india At the Dewas District Hospital 🏥 in #India , @USAID is introducing new methods to bolster maternal and child healthcare. These solutions are being scaled further throughout India 🇮🇳, expanding our impact to protect more mothers & children.
@USAID@USAIDAsia@WorldHealthSmt In #India 🇮🇳, @USAID’s partnership with the government is driving transformative change in health systems. I saw firsthand in Indore how the govt is bolstering comprehensive & quality care for communities across the country through Primary Health Centers.
@USAID@USAIDAsia We marked a year of tangible strides in primary health care at #WHS2024 w/ the Community Health Delivery Partnership, a country-driven collab we helped launch, that recognizes community health workers’ rights and critical role in connecting families to care.
#Thailand 🇹🇭 is achieving remarkable results by focusing on #PrimaryHealthCare, w/ annual health spending @ only $300 per person. In partnership w/ @USAID, heroes like health worker supervisor Poonsub Poomkaew make a difference by ensuring care reaches everyone in the community.
One of the most effective ways to move towards health care for all is by investing in primary health care, which delivers 90% of health services a person needs throughout their lifetime. That’s why I’m pleased to share how USAID is supporting it all over the world 🌍.
