Crypto Term Simplified: IMPERMANENT LOSS

Heard of "impermanent loss" in DeFi?

It sounds scary, but let’s break it down in a way a 5-year old can get it 😅👇🏽

Impermanent loss happens when the value of the tokens you deposited into a liquidity pool changes after you deposited them - causing you to have less money than if you had just held your tokens in your wallet.

🔥Let's use an illustration:

You put 1 ETH ($2,000) and 2,000 USDC into a DeFi platform’s pool.

While your tokens are there, ETH’s price jumps to $3,000.

Cool right? Well… not really.

When you go to withdraw, the system automatically adjusts your token balance to keep the pool balanced, you end up with less ETH than you started with.

So you missed out on that price pump 💔

That missed profit is your impermanent loss.

🔥Why "Impermanent"?

Because the loss is not final until you withdraw.

If prices go back to what they were when you deposited, the loss disappears.

But if you withdraw during the price change - it's permanent.

🔥Can You Avoid It?

- Stick to stablecoin pairs (e.g., USDC/DAI)

- Use protocols that offer impermanent loss protection

- Only provide liquidity for assets you believe in long-term
