Deal to sell South African Airways (SAA) officially collapsed yesterday after 3 years of negotiations. The government had planned to sell majority stake in SAA to private investors.

MY VIEW: SAA will not to be viable as a fully state owned airline. It’s been tried for years and it hasn’t worked.
SAA needs a strong strategic airline partner (not just a financial investor or outside advisor) with a track record of successfully investing and running airlines across Africa.
I highly recommend to the government of #SouthAfrica to consider Ethiopian Airlines Group, one of the world’s largest and most profitable carriers which is committed to collaboratively grow Africa’s aviation industry.
I will repeat what I have stated in public many times in the past: Our M&A and strategy advisory team has managed numerous airline transactions in Africa and our experience shows that stand-alone airlines are “cash sink holes” and have no viable future in Africa, not in South Africa, #Nigeria, #Kenya or anywhere else.
I often hear from African aviation executives and government officials that Ethiopian Airlines is state owned and therefore they too can emulate ET’s success. My standard response is, ET is the exception and it’s almost impossible to replicate its success. If it was, there will have been more ETs in Africa today including in countries which have extra cash flows from oil and other natural resources such as Nigeria or even highly industrialized wealthy ones like South Africa.
Reference: The EU/UK, with $22.3 trillion GDP, has only three full service airline groups (IAG, Lufthansa and Air France-KLM). And yet, Africa, with $3.0 trillion GDP, seeks 54 government owned national airlines. This makes no sense.
BTW, am pretty sure by now you have heard of "rampaging gangs of canibals" that have seized Haiti and "killing and eating people in the streets". Never be deceived, that is all imperial racist balderdash. Haitian born University of Johannesburg Professor Jemina Pierre explains.
