Released in theaters in June 2013, Secretly, Greatly is a legendary action-comedy drama directed by Jang Cheol Soo that recorded about 6.95 million admissions. Based on the hugely popular webtoon of the same name by writer Hun (Choi Jong Hyuk), the film became a massive box office success thanks to the actors’ incredible character synchronization, as if they had stepped right out of the comic itself. At a time when webtoon-based movies were still unfamiliar, it opened the door wide for their huge commercial potential and is still talked about today as one of the representative works that greatly expanded the Korean film market.
A perfect ensemble created by striking contrasts and an outstanding supporting cast
The film’s greatest strength is the sharp contrast between its first and second halves. In the first half, Kim Soohyun’s touching performance as the foolish Bang Dong Gu, dressed in a green tracksuit and fully throwing himself into the role, combines with the warm neighborhood stories to deliver constant laughter. But in the second half, after the characters throw away their foolish disguises and reveal who they really are, the sharp and disciplined hand-to-hand action and the tragic fate of young people crushed by the cold reality of a divided Korea leave viewers heartbroken and in tears.
The brilliant acting chemistry and youthful bond shared by the three leads, Kim Soohyun, Park Kiwoong, and Lee Hyunwoo, become the highlight of the film. Kim Soohyun, in particular, received praise from both the public and critics through this movie, sweeping the Best New Actor award at the 50th Grand Bell Awards as well as the Best New Actor and Popularity awards at the 50th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Kim Soohyun cleared himself of the false accusation that he dated the late Kim Saeron when she was a minor, and has begun preparing for his return to activities after 1 year and 4 months. Earlier, on July 15, he took part in a photoshoot for Philippine clothing brand BENCH, once again showing the presence of a Hallyu star.
In fact, when Kim Soohyun held a press conference about his private life scandal in March last year, public opinion was still very cold toward him. On the occasion of actor Kim Soohyun’s 19th debut anniversary, child welfare organization Green Umbrella announced on the 24th that fans from Korea and overseas donated clothing for children from vulnerable families.
This donation was led by the Actor Kim Soohyun Korea & Global Fan Union, made up of Daum Cafe Yukaris and DC Kim Soohyun Gallery, with fans from 114 countries around the world taking part. The fans came together to celebrate Kim Soohyun’s 19th debut anniversary while also putting meaningful sharing into action.
To symbolize his 19th debut anniversary, the donated items included 1,900 children’s T-shirts and 1,900 hats, making a total of 3,800 items. The fan union prepared 1,000 sets, and clothing brand BENCH added another 900 sets, completing a total of 1,900 sets.
Green Umbrella plans to provide the donated clothing to children from vulnerable families in Korea so they can wear them according to the season.
The fan union shared, “It’s meaningful that we could express our congratulations for his 19th debut anniversary through real help for children. We hope this can become a small contribution that supports their healthy growth.”
