One issue we have in the Sunni tradition in relation to the early period of Islam (specifically that first century) is the reports that we have are clearly demonstrating biases of different kinds. There’s pro and anti Alid and Umayyad reports, as well as others.
When you read about early Islamic history and you see the chaos and destruction that ensued during the first and second fitna and during Karbala and al-Harra etc, you realise how incredibly unique the Prophet really was. With him, they were united. Without him, we’re nothing.
This is definitely an issue today among Sunnis - we seem to want to distance ourselves entirely from Karbala in the fear of being seen as Shia.
We barely teach the history of Karbala (and wider early Islamic history) and expect to be seen as superior.
