Soil nailing is a ground improvement technique that reinforces existing soil slopes or excavations using regularly spaced steel bars (nails) inserted into drilled holes and typically grouted. A facing, often shotcrete, is then applied to the slope.

In 2013, eight-year-old Maria Chelysheva became the sole survivor of her entire family after toxic gas from a cellar full of decaying potatoes filled their home.
Her 42-year-old father, Mikhail Chelyshev, went down to the cellar to fetch potatoes for lunch and collapsed, dying on the spot.
When his wife and son followed to check on him, they met the same deadly fate.Maria’s 68-year-old grandmother called for help but then entered the cellar herself and never returned.
Investigators later determined that the potatoes had rotted in the poorly ventilated space for too long, releasing lethal fumes.
The family had no idea that something as simple as spoiled potatoes could turn deadly in an enclosed area.
Maria survived only because she was the one family member who never went into the cellar.
