🔬 Are you a researcher with basic knowledge of light microscopy who wants to learn to solve biological problems at the cellular and molecular level in vivo? Then the EMBL Course #EMBLFluorImaging was designed for you!
🔗 Apply for 'Advanced fluorescence imaging techniques' by 8 February: https://t.co/1pmYZcTV4R
This practical course will cover advanced light microscopy techniques, and participants will learn how to derive qualitative and quantitative insights into molecular mechanisms in cells, tissues, and developing organisms.
The course will focus on multiple fluorescence microscopy techniques:
🔹 Fast time-lapse microscopy of living cells
🔹 Spinning disk and point-scanning confocal microscopy of large (3D) samples
🔹 Two-photon microscopy and Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) imaging
🔹 Photo-manipulation as a tool
🔹 Multicolour single-molecule localisation microscopy (SMLM) with spectral demixing and DNA-PAINT
🔹 Expansion microscopy
🔹 FRET-based techniques
🔹 Microscope automation

Launching an Ambitious Dementia Research Cohort in Northern Nigeria 🧠🌍
After weeks of training and preparation, we have officially begun participant recruitment for my @wellcometrust-funded #Dementia Project in Northern #Nigeria as part of the @DementiaNorthNG .
As part of this work, we are establishing the first well-characterised dementia research cohorts in the region, designed not only to advance understanding of dementia in #African populations, but also to generate health data that will inform a range of public health priorities — from diabetes to cardiovascular health.
A central output of this work will be a collection of induced pluripotent stem cells (#iPSCs) to expand the African open-access iPSC biobank that we recently established @BioRTCNig. This will provide a vital global resource for studying the biology of dementia, as well as other neurodegenerative and systemic diseases, ensuring African representation in biomedical research at the cellular and molecular level.
We are combining cutting-edge science with local capacity building — training clinicians, scientists, and community health workers, and strengthening diagnostic and research infrastructure in our region. This project is a step towards a future where health solutions are informed by data from all populations, and where communities are active partners in the science that serves them.
Thank you to Wellcome Trust for supporting this vision, and to our incredible collaborators, the #Yobe State government, and community members who are making it a reality.
We are thrilled to share that OSCN has been featured in the INOSC August Newsletter!

A Humbling Honour, A Shared Journey
Yesterday, I was deeply honoured to be turbaned as the Shettima Ilmube of the Damaturu Emirate. The title, which means “Custodian of Knowledge and Enlightenment” in the Kanuri language, is reserved for individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to education, intellectual advancement, and societal development.
The title carries great responsibility, but also profound meaning. I accept it not for myself alone, but on behalf of every teacher who nurtured me, every mentor who believed in me, and every young mind striving to rise through knowledge and service.
This honour is a call to continue dedicating myself to the advancement of science, education, and innovation, especially as it relates to our communities. It is a reminder that our roots and our identity matter, even as we engage with the global stage.
