LEVI "YOGI" BOUGH
My Favorite Fairy Tale

Levi Yogi Bough, was the first black athlete in the history of St. Francis College in New York. "Yogi" was born in St. Croix in 1921 in the Caribbean. At two years old, his family emigrated to Brooklyn in New York City.
Mr. Bough was a talented athlete, particularly on the basketball court, and also excelled in his studies. He attended Virginia Union University, for his first year of college. But just like so many Americans during World War II, Yogi was drafted into the US Army in April 1942, assigned to the 761th tank battalion, known as the "Black Panthers".

At dawn on June 6, 1944, the largest, most complex military operation in the history of the world began: the D-Day Landing.
The 761𝘴𝘵 𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯, was made up mostly of African Americans. They landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy, in October 1944, during the Battle of the Ardennes in Germany, They were assigned to the Third Army of General George Patton jr.
Mr. Bough spent over three years fighting in Europe. He met his wife in Germany, and upon his return to America he received a basketball scholarship from St. Francis College, Brooklyn.
Although Bough was accepted completely by his team, there were episodes of racism especially during road trips south, where he often had to sleep in a separate hotel.
Continuing his education, he graduated from San Francisco University in 1950 with a degree in philosophy and psychology and then received a government scholarship to continue his education in political science at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland.

He made a living as a gas station attendant and later as a furniture salesman, all the while studying and becoming a basketball coach. I actually played for that same basketball team in Lausanne, 30 years later.

In 1954 he arrived in Varese Italy, as a player/coach. He remained in Italy coaching basketball in Varese, Bologna, Como, Pavia, and Vigevano.
Mr. Bough lived a long fruitful life in the beautiful lakeside city of Lugano, Switzerland. No doubt, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
After experiencing the devastation of war in Europe, and the human degradation of racism in the USA, he passed away peacefully and fulfilled in Lugano, Switzerland, on May 19, 2008.
