Local media writing stories on area youth sports (players/teams/coaches) making them “for subscribers only” should be ashamed. Too little coverage on them anyway — and NOW we have to sign up for a subscription just to read? Unfair to THOSE KIDS/TEAMS/SCHOOLS. Do Better FOR THEM.

HS or AAU coaches: you aren’t supposed to be the AGENT for the player. If college reach out for info or interest. YOUR JOB is to help connect coach-to-player. YOU DONT decide which colleges they should or shouldn’t talk to, and not share contact info. THE PLAYER chooses…NOT YOU.

Been LOTS all over social media in basketball circles about the transfer portal. Admittedly, it is A solution — but long-term, may not be THE solution. I’d like to take a moment and get some numbers; for where many stand on it:

@CoachNiehaus @MHSAA @GoFanHS — and before anyone says “colleges have enough money to afford it”; not the case with smaller schools (the vast majority of these girls are being viewed by). Only D1’s have a real “recruiting budget”. MHSAA dropping the ball on this one. Again —-> 💰 💰💰

@CoachNiehaus @MHSAA @GoFanHS I even heard that MHSAA makes college coaches pay. What??? They’re going to games to recruit these student athletes! I would think MHSAA would not be worried about their own $$$ in this case. They should WANT the colleges there; the kids and their parents sure do.

@CoachNiehaus @MHSAA @GoFanHS Can’t just pay cash at the door, either. Clearly a mechanism for MHSAA to be certain they capture as many dollars as they can. No admittance without a ticket; no ticket unless purchased in advance on GoFan (or on site via GoFan and card reader at admissions table). Ridiculous

100% Facts.

The transfer portal is replete with players who didn’t follow that advice. And many more — just “out of basketball”, for the same reason. Stop the nonsense. Take your ego out of it.

Go where you feel it’s the best fit for you socially, academically, the school that wants you the most, and the one that makes the most financial sense.

When your 🏀 trainer posts a picture or video of you and him/her during, or after a training session: it’s not so much to help promote YOU; but to promote them — off of your name, your time, your work, and your accomplishments.

Early in my coaching...ego was too big to acknowledge that I got something (playcall, roster decision, application of a team rule, opinion about another coach, judgement about another school/program, etc.) DEAD WRONG.
