God is much better at youth ministry than any of us are & He has the bigger part. Our work: pray, trust, love, serve. repeat #stumin #uthmin

The White Sox need to dust off the old iconic Pirates of the Caribbean/Thunderstruck intro for Wednesday's game. Imagine an updated version of this #WhiteSox

There’s more to the youth mental health crisis than social media. A key culprit is perfectionism.

307 studies, 35 years, 83k students: Young adults feel growing pressure to be flawless.

It's a risk factor for depression and anxiety—and it began a generation before smartphones.

Toxic empathy? Empathy (truly trying to understand where another is coming from) is not toxic. It is the way of Jesus. Empathy is not the problem nor is it soft or weak. Lack of empathy is the truly toxic path. Love deeply and unapologetically, friends❤️

I discovered the truth that when we’re not in touch with what's going on inside us, we're not in reality but in illusion. And when we're not in reality, we're not in spirituality, because the authentic spiritual life is not an escape from reality but an absolute commitment to it.

Happy Youth Pastor Sunday to all those who participate. Praying for all the youth pastors preaching this morning. If you know you know. #stumin

It's time to cleanse your timeline with this wholesome thread 🧵

1. This is 7 yrs old Tom. One day he told his schoolmates that his uncle was Superman. Kids made fun of him and no one believed him. Then his mother made a call, and asked her brother-in-law to take him to school one day. And Henry Cavill, of course, was delighted to do so...

Last night I took a ministry resident for a hospital visitation. On the way over I gave him the usual speech for this unique ministry venue:

1. Silence the phone
2. Grab a breath mint
3. Bring a Bible
4. Talk little, listen much
5. Read a psalm, then pray it over them
6. Tears okay, but no preaching, no advice, no counsel
7. Treat them with dignity in their felt vulnerability
8. Speak of God and eternity, not the weather
9. Thank and honor the nursing staff
10. Above all: Don't stay long

Kids in religious families have fared better in the smartphone era, with smaller rises in mental illness. @ZachMRausch and I believe it is primarily due to being anchored in real-world communities with rituals and obligations, low anomie. Thanks @frasernelson...

ICYMI: I wrote about our national hanging out crisis. In the last 20 years, averaging face-to-face socializing has declined ~30% among adults and ~50% among teens.

We've never been so alone. And it's driving us crazy.
